The Real Meaning of "Five More Minutes"

Every parent has heard it.

"Just five more minutes?"

Five more minutes outside.

Five more minutes in the pool.

Five more minutes before bedtime.

As children, we say the words without thinking about what they really mean.

I'm happy here.

I'm not ready for this to end.

Somewhere along the way, we stop asking.

But we never really outgrow the feeling.

We Just Say It Differently

As adults, "five more minutes" rarely sounds like five more minutes.

It's lingering around the table after the plates have been cleared.

One more cup of coffee before everyone starts their day.

One more game before dinner.

Staying in the conversation a little longer because nobody is quite ready to leave.

Sometimes it's simply looking around and realizing:

This is good.

Lingering around the table, enjoying time together.

Maybe That's the Real Meaning

Maybe "five more minutes" was never really about time.

Maybe it's about recognizing a moment worth holding onto.

Because somewhere inside us, we know things won't always look exactly like this.

Children grow. Families change. Years pass much faster than we expect.

And those moments we want to stretch just a little longer?

They're rarely about what we're doing.

They're about who we're with.

The people laughing across the table.

The grandchild curled up beside you.

The friends whose stories somehow get better every time they're told.

Maybe we ask for five more minutes because, for just a moment, we are right where we want to be.

Before the Rhythm Changes

Late summer seems especially good at reminding us of this.

The days are still long, but we know they won't stay that way.

School begins.

Calendars fill.

The rhythm changes.

And suddenly "five more minutes" feels a little more precious.

Five more minutes around the table.

Five more minutes before we call it a night.

Not because we can stop time.

But because we can notice it while we're in it.

Five More Minutes at The Gathering

"Five more minutes" is heard here a lot.

And maybe that's one of the greatest gifts of gathering together.

For a little while, life gives us enough room to savor

the moments we aren't quite ready to leave.

The ones we don't want to lose.

The ones that quietly whisper,

"This is so good."

We can't stop time.

But we can recognize the good moments while they're happening.

And we can say yes when someone asks:

"Five more minutes?"

Because sometimes five more minutes isn't really about five more minutes at all.

It's another way of saying:

I love this. I'm not ready for it to end.
